Canva is web-based graphic design suite that allows for the creation of clean and consistent images that are easily shared across a team (even if they do not have a Canva account). DEF uses Canva Pro, which we have for free as a non-profit.
The primary use of Canva is creating graphics for Eventbrite and Agora events. There is a standard template for Agora events and are all saved in a shared folder. Each file is named according to the Agora and is shared with the Agora so that they can make changes if needed. As new events are created, new "page" is added to the graphic file, so that all previous graphics are still available, should they be needed again in the future. The goal is to simplify access and version control (one file per Agora with every event template in there, the most recent at the top) across both the volunteer team and Agoras.
There are additional folders available for Annual Conference, DEFx Events, Volunteer Roles and the like, which have the same ability to be edited by anyone with the link, if that feature is enabled. All graphics be "Shared with Team" to ensure they are visible to others who may be editing.
The ability to share files (and editing permissions) just by sending a link is probably the most valuable and useful aspect of Canva, as edit-enabled links to draft graphics can easily be attached to Trello cards for ongoing tasks. This allows for collaborative design and content updates that make everyone's lives easier.
As far as use goes, Canva is pretty intuitive. You will not likely create new graphics unless you are specifically supporting the Communications Team, as there are several templates already available (and they are often optimized for certain dimensional constraints of social media).
It is worth going through a few totorials to understand the tool better if you will be using it, as there are a few functions (like selecting multiple objects) that can be tricky. Once identified, though, they are easy to adjust.
A great feature of Canva is that you can pull from and copy existing templates, color schemes and graphics easily with access from the web. Although the app-based interface on mobile phones leaves much to be desired, it at least can let you access existing graphics, which may come in handy in a pinch.
