This group has an incredible mission and culture that has been built and maintained by the most amazing team of volunteers (just check out the Team Directory). As a volunteer, you are now part of that team and we want to bring you up to speed on everything happening as fast as possible.
For any team to operate effectively, there have to be processes in place and established expectations. That is the reality of a distributed and virtual team.
Our growth over the last few years has been really exciting and we are looking forward to more awesome things in the future. We try to keep the processes simple and scalable, minimizing bottlenecks and individuals.
We recognize your time is valuable, so we try to require minimal inputs so that you can focus on action and the admin work is kept to a minimum.
But, there are some things that you'll still need to use: Trello, Google Drive, Slack, and Zoom are our core tools but there are some like Eventbrite, Canva, and Psono that you will probably need to be familiar with.
The Operations Team literally has one job: make the DEF national team more effective and allow it to move faster. Help us, help you!
We are constantly evaluating new tools and ideas as the team grows to try to push the edge of what is possible in an all-volunteer organization. We move fast and expect people to operate with autonomy that is in-line with both our mission and values.
This site, the Volunteer Hub, is our primary home for continuity in how DEF operates. We are continually working to improve it, and need everyone, especially new volunteers, to look here as the first place to find information.
Pages are always being updated - when you are logged-in with your @def.org email, you have the ability to update it as well.
Without the feedback and knowledge of every volunteer to make changes, we quickly will lose track of important information in the slew of Slack threads, Trello alerts, email messages, Google Drive folders and other tools that we use.
After years of trying different combinations, we've discovered that the flexibility of this site provides the ease of updating one finds in a Google Doc with the simplicity of navigation and discovery you would expect on a website.
